Montego Bay scuba diving - a reason for your vacation
Cool Aqua Sun Sport, run by PADI-certified instructor Percival Plummer, offers everything from resort courses to specialty certification, with outings to a variety of sites, including the Basket Reef, where you'll see basket sponges, sea fans, parrotfish, and perhaps even a turtle or dolphin. North Coast Marine Sports, located at the Half Moon Golf, Tennis & Beach Club, offers everything from scuba diving to Sunfish, snorkel gear, kayaks, and more. They can arrange for deep-sea fishing trips and snorkel cruises, too. Doctor's Cave Beach is part of the Montego Bay Marine Park, which was established to protect the wide variety of marine life among the coral reefs right offshore from the popular beaches. You can rent snorkel gear from the beach club at Doctor's Cave, or from the beach clubs at any of the local beaches. You might also like to head across the channel to check out Coyaba Reef, Seaworld Reef, and Royal Reef, which are full of barjacks, blue and brown chromis, yellow-headed wrasses, and spotlight parrotfish. You must have a guide here, as the currents are strong and the wind picks up in the afternoon. If you're not staying at a resort offering snorkeling expeditions, then Seaworld is your best bet. For about $30 per hour, a guide swims with you and points out various fish. A Waterworld for Families--The $20-million Aguasol Theme Park, Walter Fletcher Beach, lures with its array of watersports activities including a giant water slide, plus a go-kart track, a large sandy beach, and planned amusements that cover everything from fashion shows to presentations of reggae. There's also an outdoor restaurant and a sports bar featuring 42 big-screen televisions, and at press time there was a health club under construction, and some "go-buggy" electric carts. An upper deck is ideal for sunbathing, and there's also a picnic area. At night a dance club dominates the action. Open daily from 10am to 10pm, the attraction charges J$200 (US$3.30) adults, J$100 (US$1.65) for children age 12 and under. Rentals of beach chairs or umbrellas go for J$600 (US$9.95) each.
